The promotional rate around USD50 a nite for a deluxe room here is fair. But not luxurious compared to Inya Lake Hotel at USD35 for locals and USD68 for foreigners. But that hotel is far from Chinatown. Breakfast here is pretty good for Asian travellers as the food suits our taste buds. The main attraction here is your own walking tour to marvel at the old Chinese shop houses that tower 3 to 4 or more stories high. Many still have traditional shophouse plaques and antiquated facade decorations complete with timber louvred window shutters. These are Chinese shop houses on steroids, so to speak. Lovers of Chinese and Colonial architecture will find them fascinating. Nightlife on nearby 19th street is another attraction. BBQ food and beer always draw a big crowd. But despite being in Chinatown, the quality of the smallish Chinese/Myanmar restaurants here are quite basic and cleanliness isn't top priority. Opportunities abound for a well run Chinese restaurant with a heritage ambience and food with less MSG. One would have to walk towards 31st and 32nd Streets crossed by Anwartha Street to look for a decent place to eat. The generic sounding Indian Chef Restaurant is a good choice especially for Muslim diners looking for halal food. The chicken samosa and ginger tea here are excellent. The Ambrosia Briyani looks good too. Wet market, street market, textile and apparel shops, kitchen accessories including metal pots and pans, etc., offer endless choices between 26th Street and 17th Street (where Best Western is located). Good place to buy the local sarong or longyi which range from 6,000 kyats for the cheapest quality to 14,000 for a higher quality piece. Best Western Chinatown is my preferred hotel. Easily accessible by taxi or Grab transport to and from the airport. Only thing is that house keeping need to inspect the nooks and corners of the shower cubicles and toilet bowl areas.
