Where to stay in Petra
Petra hotels & accommodations

This was my first stay in hotel in Jordan. I wanted to go to Petra immediately once we arrived at there,so this was the best hotel. We stayed for 2 nights and this was definitely worth for money. Night at Petra was not up to the level I expected but day time walking around Petra was really nice. I want to take my parents here and stay for a few days..The bar in the cav...

i was very impressed with the service at la maison hotel. the staff was very friendly and helpful. i traveled from the border crossing near eilat. i was concerned with my transfer to la maison hotel. i could have taken a taxi from the border to aqaba then a bus to petra. trying to make the best of my time i asked the hotel for a taxi to meet me at the border. they sent...

Good, solid hotel with great staff. Nice breakfast and great location just 500 steps from the Petra Park entrance. No gym though, but great pools. Rooms were older and clean, but wiring and plugs for modern computer / devices is challenging. It's a good value compared to the other hotels in the area, and great location for access to every where in town and for the ...

Me and my group stayed here for about 5 nights, i promised with the manager (or owner i'm not sure) that it was such a memorable place that i would recommend you to have a stay in Petra. The hotel is not far from the Petra's entrance that we can walk. The staff is very helpful, nice and friendly. The most thing that i like is food, both breakfast and other meals. We re...

We stayed here three nights with our adult daughter. It was so relaxing and wonderful to come back to after full days of touring Petra. The breakfast was delicious and filling. The evening tea and music were a perfect end to the evening. We opted for dinner for two nights and it was delicious. The staff is really friendly and helpful and it was nice to sit around ...

We enjoyed our stay in Petra to the fullest thanks to the quality of the Movenpick. Firstly, the location is very good, right on the visitors' entrance. Secondly, we were upgraded to a junior suite, which makes things even better. On top of that, the people at the front desk are always attentive and keen to answer any questions on regards to Petra itself (Petra by nigh...

Me and my mum were looking for an affordable, clean place to stay while visiting Petra. Al Rashid Hotel lived up to our expectations and then some. The place was clean and for the price it's terrific. Though it is a little bit of a walk (20 minutes up hill) from the entrance to Petra, I'd still recommend it - when we were too tired to walk, we took a cab for 1 jd. Most...

I had a good stay in Sharah Mountains Hotel. Stayed there for 2 nights in late April 2018. It provides basic amenities but otherwise was exceptionally clean. Shower was clean, clean towels were provided. Hot water was hot. Breakfast was good for the price that you pay. Did not have any of the dinner buffet there though as most of the evenings I was pretty worn out ...

The people who run this hotel make it a great place to stay. They are helpful beyond all expectations, arranging trips for you wherever you want to go, trying to make it as cheap as possible (Jordan can be expensive!), driving you down to Petra everyday, simple but great breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel!

Our first visit to Jordan and Petra, we picked a hotel chain easily recognized with a quality standard expected. Our choice was not disappointing and the staff were very accommodating allowing us to check in early with a room overlooking the whole of the Petra valley above the town. Our half board was very good along with our overall experience.

The location of AlAnbat is great, therooms were clean and the linen was crisp. The staff was very friendly and management in fact upgraded our room. You can enjoy great views of Petra from the hotel. The free shuttle to Petra visitor centre is a good bonus, although the buffet breakfast could have better variety. Would strongly recommend for families, good value for mo...

Visited in Apr 2019 + Clean big room + Wonderful service from all staffs, especially for the man at the breakfast time. He is very friendly. + Delicious breakfast. We had walked for 5 hours in Petra and were very tired. We needed to shower and freshen up and rest at the earliest. That is where this hotel was a little elusive, as it was not showing up on the GPS. The trick to finding this hotel is to drive towards Wadi Musa from the Petra Site. Then head to the center of the village, where you will see a triangular divider in the ...

I booked single room there,it’s clean tiny and organized. The breakfast is simple but they serve the hot water, tea, coffee and biscuit the whole day. The owner is quite friendly, the first day I went there he told me the best route of visiting Petra. I would like to recommend the hostel to you!

thanks to the lovely staff at edom the stay has been the best so far. this level of service will be difficult to match by other hotels. mahumud at the front desk went out of his way to ensure that i am able to change my bookings from 2 days to 1 day on checking in to facilitate me coming back to petra for the night visit as it wasn't on when i checked in. i have of cou...

First, let me clarify something, although this is a great hotel, it is not a luxury one; but I hope thats not what you are expecting from a hotel in this area. As the hotel I reserved was being renovated I was re-booked to the Movenpick at the gate of the historical park - so entry to the park was very easy as it was just a few metres away. we have been to a lot of hotels in jordan and this was by far the best in terms of the experience and the value. the hotel has a very cozy comfortable feel about it and ibrahim and his staff are incredible. they will go out of their way to ensure everything is catered for and treat you like family. they were very good in arranging various trips and services and helped ...

We had a very pleasant stay at Mussa Spring. The staff here were all very helpful and assisted us with arrangements for everything from taxis, tours, buses, food, everything really. We booked a deluxe room and based on the TV and AC, I think we got one, but the room was still small. Although we specifically booked a king-size bed, as a male couple, the clerk gave us a room with two twin beds without asking our approval. Since he and his colleague spoke in Arabic, then used the words "king-sized bed" in English, it seemed prudent not to fuss. If...

Amra Palace impressed us from the reception. The staff were extremely warm and friendly and made us feel right at home. After a long day at Petra, our aching bodies were soothed by the pool, jacuzzi, turkish bath and most importantly, the comfortable rooms. Special mention goes to the beds which were extremely plush, as well as the masseurs at the turkish bath who we...

The nicest owner ever, hotel offers a breakfast, dinners and lunchboxes. Room was clean and spacious. It's 20 minutes walk to down the hill to Petra, it's not the closest one you can find, but the cheaper in all town. If you don't like to walk, you can take a taxi, there are lots of them like everywhere in Jordan :)

The hotel was inexpensive and functional, and very quiet. Not exactly as advertised: It's a long walk down hill to the Petra visitor's center (and then a long walk back up hill into town). The hotel listing advertised a pool but the pool is actually at the Al Anbat I an expensive taxi ride quite far out of town. The breakfast was extremely Spartan. But this was an...

Real reviews for hotels
The people in Petra are hunger for money from travelers. We went to a restaurant and ordered a 5 JD dish and a pepsi.
The historic sites in and around Petra are a must see. Be prepared for some walking, but it is definetly worth the effort.
Must visit Petra and Petra by Night, spend at least 2 full days at Petra as it is enormous. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
It is one of the seven wonders that needs to be visited in a life time. Bring water and great walking shoes.
Overpriced and over rated. Probably worth seeing but not as good as many other historical sites around the world.
The City of Wadi Musa is strongly influenced by the presence of Petra. It is located in the middle of mountains.
You can spend a few hours hiring a donkey/horse/camel and tour to the Treasury and Monastery, or a full day exploring most of the site on foot.
An obvious stop on any itinerary, the monuments are pretty fantastic. A little disappointing to see all the gift shops adjacent to the sights, but I suppose that's to be expected nowadays at most places of tourism.
I visited Petra and Jordan for a quick 5 day vacation, traveling solo. The people of Jordan are wonderful.

More about Petra
Discovering the Wonders of Petra Jordan
Petra, the ancient city carved into rose-red cliffs, is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site and proudly stands as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This remarkable archaeological site, located in the heart of Jordan, is a testament to the ingenuity of the Nabateans, who thrived here over 2,000 years ago. As you approach Petra, the anticipation builds, and the beauty of its iconic structures, such as the Treasury, emerges from the rugged landscape, showcasing intricate facades that have withstood the test of time.
The allure of Petra lies not only in its stunning architecture but also in its rich history. The Nabateans were master traders, controlling the lucrative spice and silk routes, and their influence is evident in the elaborate tombs, temples, and water conduit systems they constructed. Each rock-cut monument tells a story, inviting visitors to explore the depths of a civilization that once flourished in this arid region. As you wander through the narrow Siq, the dramatic gorge leading to the city, you can almost feel the echoes of ancient footsteps, a reminder of the vibrant life that once animated this extraordinary place.
Whether you’re an archaeology enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone seeking adventure, Petra offers a unique experience that captivates all who visit. From the moment you step foot in this enchanting city, you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by the whispers of history and the stunning beauty of nature. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this remarkable site and appreciate the incredible craftsmanship that has made Petra a symbol of Jordan’s cultural heritage.
Why Petra Jordan Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List
Petra is not just a destination; it’s an experience that promises to leave an indelible mark on your travel memories. The breathtaking landscapes, characterized by towering cliffs and rugged terrain, provide a stunning backdrop for exploration. Every corner of Petra offers unique vistas, from the majestic view of the Treasury at sunrise to the panoramic sights from the Monastery. This is a place where natural beauty and human creativity intertwine, making it a must-visit for any traveler.
Beyond its visual splendor, Petra is rich in cultural heritage. The Nabatean civilization has left behind a legacy that continues to intrigue scholars and visitors alike. As you hike through the Siq and into the heart of Petra, you’ll encounter fascinating historical sites that reveal the ingenuity of this ancient society. The opportunity to hike through the Siq, marvel at the intricately carved tombs, and learn about the Nabateans' advanced water management systems adds depth to your visit, making it more than just a sightseeing trip.
Unique experiences await at every turn. Whether you’re exploring the lesser-known trails, enjoying a traditional meal at a local restaurant, or participating in a guided tour that delves into the history of the site, Petra offers something for everyone. The combination of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural experiences makes it a top contender for any travel bucket list. Don't forget to capture the moments with stunning photographs that will remind you of this extraordinary adventure for years to come!
The Best Time to Explore Petra Jordan
Timing your visit to Petra can significantly enhance your experience. The ideal seasons to explore this ancient wonder are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it perfect for hiking and outdoor exploration. The temperatures are comfortable, allowing you to enjoy long walks through the Siq and around the archaeological sites without the sweltering heat of the summer sun.
Summer can be quite hot in Petra, with temperatures often soaring above 40°C (104°F). While the site remains open year-round, it’s advisable to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat. Conversely, winter (December to February) can bring cooler temperatures, and occasional rain, but the fewer crowds make it a peaceful time to explore. Just be sure to dress in layers to stay comfortable during your visit.
Another important consideration is the tourist seasons. Peak tourist times are during the spring and fall, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. This way, you can enjoy the stunning sights of Petra with fewer people around, allowing for a more intimate connection with the history and beauty of this remarkable site. Planning ahead ensures you can make the most of your Petra adventure!
Essential Travel Tips for Your Petra Adventure
Preparing for your journey to Petra involves more than just booking your accommodations. A few essential travel tips can help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. First and foremost, wear comfortable shoes! The terrain can be uneven, and you'll likely be doing a fair amount of walking or hiking, so sturdy footwear is a must. Lightweight, breathable clothing will keep you comfortable in varying temperatures, and don’t forget a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.
When packing, consider bringing a refillable water bottle, as staying hydrated is crucial during your explorations. There are water stations throughout the site, making it easy to refill as needed. Additionally, a small backpack can be handy for carrying snacks, a camera, and other essentials while you navigate the expansive archaeological site. A mobile app for self-guided tours can also enhance your experience, providing insights and historical context as you explore.
Understanding local customs and etiquette is important, too. Jordanians are known for their hospitality, so a friendly smile and greeting can go a long way. While visiting religious sites, dress modestly and be respectful of local traditions. Engaging with local guides can also enrich your experience, as they provide valuable insights and stories that bring Petra to life. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for an unforgettable adventure in Petra!

Exploring Petra's Hidden Gems and Attractions
While the Treasury and the Monastery often steal the spotlight, Petra is filled with hidden gems that deserve attention. One such site is the Temple of Dushares, a significant religious structure dedicated to the Nabatean god. Nestled among the cliffs, this temple features beautifully carved stonework and offers a glimpse into the spiritual life of the Nabateans. As you explore, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the stunning views surrounding the temple, which provide a peaceful contrast to the bustling main pathways.
Another must-see is the Winged Lion Temple, an impressive monument that showcases the blend of Nabatean and Hellenistic influences. The temple is adorned with remarkable carvings of winged lions, symbolizing strength and protection. Its location offers a fantastic vantage point for photography enthusiasts, allowing for breathtaking shots of the surrounding landscape. Be sure to venture off the beaten path to discover this hidden treasure, as it often sees fewer crowds compared to the main attractions.
Don’t miss the Ad Deir, or the Monastery, which is often considered one of Petra's most awe-inspiring sites. Although it requires a bit of a hike to reach, the breathtaking view and the sheer scale of the structure make it well worth the effort. As you ascend the steps, take your time to enjoy the surroundings, and once you arrive, marvel at the intricate façade that rivals the Treasury. The serenity of the Monastery, especially during sunrise or sunset, creates an unforgettable atmosphere that will leave you in awe.
Family-Friendly Activities in Petra Jordan
Petra is not just for solo adventurers and history buffs; it’s also a fantastic destination for families! One of the best family-friendly activities is the self-guided walking tour of the main trail. With a mobile app that provides historical context and engaging stories, children will be captivated as they explore the ancient city. The app features interactive elements that make learning fun, encouraging kids to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Nabateans.
For families with younger children, consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Siq. This leisurely journey allows everyone to enjoy the stunning scenery without tiring little legs. The ride provides a unique perspective on the towering cliffs and ancient structures, making it a memorable experience for the whole family. Once you reach the Treasury, kids will be thrilled to see one of the most iconic landmarks in the world up close!
Another engaging option is to participate in a traditional Jordanian cooking class offered by local restaurants. This hands-on experience allows families to learn about local cuisine while bonding over delicious food. Children can help prepare dishes like mansaf (a traditional lamb dish) or falafel, providing a fun and educational experience that extends beyond the archaeological wonders of Petra.
Outdoor Adventures and Hiking in Petra
For those seeking adventure, Petra offers a variety of hiking trails that cater to different skill levels. One of the most popular hikes is the trail to the Monastery, which takes you through stunning landscapes and offers breathtaking views along the way. Understanding Petra's Historical Significance
Petra is not just an archaeological wonder; it is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Nabatean civilization. Established as a thriving trading hub over 2,000 years ago, Petra played a crucial role in the spice and silk trade routes, connecting the East and West. The city’s strategic location allowed the Nabateans to control trade, leading to their prosperity and the remarkable construction of the rock-cut architecture that still stands today.
The Nabateans were skilled engineers and architects, developing advanced water management systems that enabled them to thrive in the arid desert environment. These innovations included cisterns, aqueducts, and channels that transported water from distant sources, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the city. As you explore Petra, you’ll encounter remnants of these systems, which highlight the ingenuity of the Nabateans and their ability to adapt to their surroundings.
Throughout its history, Petra has been influenced by various cultures, including the Hellenistic and Roman empires.
