I requested for a non smoking room and they placed me in a ladies floor with no bath tub which is perfectly fine with me. I'm happy the very polite make reception officer was able to accommodate my request the last minute. Room was is big enough and perfect for solo traveler like me. Room looks new, shower was great with different modes. Bed is clean and comfortable to sleep in. there's also a small working table which you can big enough for you to use if you need to work. They provide daily 500ml bottle of water, bath towel, slippers and night gown. Extra amenities such as tea, brush , toothbrush, facial cleaners and moisturizers are available on the reception area. Location is perfect just minutes walk away from Shin Shizouka bus station, JR station and Local trains! surrounded by lots of restaurants and family mart. I highly recommend this place especially for solo travellers like me.
This time, I made another reservation for one more night later, and they honored my request for a non-smoking room based on my previous reservation, allowing me to stay in a non-smoking room for both nights. Moreover, it was a bright room with windows on two sides! Over the past three years, I've been staying at the Grand Hotel and the Garden at low prices (through Agoda), so I've only been in rooms where there are windows only in the bathroom and toilet, which made me think that "Nakashimaya's rooms are a bit dark." But I was pleasantly greeted by the morning light. The biggest highlight of staying at Nakashimaya is the dining and café options. The breakfast buffet, meals and café service during the odd hours from lunch to dinner, the evening buffet, and a la carte Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes… in terms of food and relaxation, it doesn’t make you feel inconvenienced even if you’re alone on a weekday, and I even think that Nakashimaya is unmatched in that regard, especially considering my recent travels. The only unfortunate thing is that, as mentioned earlier, the rooms are generally dim, so there are some places that seem to be overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Lately, when I notice these spots, I end up wiping and scrubbing… in short, it has become a place where I want to stay even to that extent. I highly recommend it as the best option in Shizuoka.

One night at a low price on Agoda. The location, newness, and cleanliness were all wonderful, and the bed sheets were crisp, allowing me to have a comfortable night. The downsides were that I requested a non-smoking room during booking, but the change resulted in an upgrade with an additional charge, and there was only a shower-type non-smoking room available (which was comfortable). Additionally, the foreign woman at the front desk had difficulty understanding the check-in process and room verification, which took some time.

I came across an article about "Staying in a Building in Shizuoka City" and became interested in selecting it as a mid-stay location for my trip to Tokyo via the JR conventional line from Kansai. According to a hotel price comparison site, I chose the "Garden Hotel Shizuoka," which is quite a typical business hotel with private rooms. The front desk is likely on the former rooftop floor, and the guest rooms are located on the 6th to 8th floors. The building faces the intersection of the currency exchange town and entertainment district, just up the corner from the convenience store in front of Shizuoka Station. The hotel ensures a comfortable and quiet environment with a height of 2.2 meters by cleverly using the elevated floor to run piping and other installations. There seems to be a high-end breakfast restaurant on the ground floor, but since I opted for the "Café Mountain, Sea, and Sun Asty Shizuoka Store" (a cafe-style outlet like Mos Food) inside the station for my early morning departure from Shizuoka, I passed on it. (If the café had a private meeting room like the one in the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, it could be used for business breakfast meetings as well.) The room is equipped with a small refrigerator, a hot water pot, a unit bath, and a toilet with a washlet. The power outlet on the desk has been remodeled and I used the one on the wall, but I think it was somewhat hard to distinguish. This is my third time staying in a building in Shizuoka, and while I haven't experienced all its attractions, there are various options available, and I feel there is still more depth to explore. Additionally, along the JR Tōkaidō Line, there are many streetcars in Toyohashi City and other railways like Enshū Railway in Hamamatsu City, and Shizuoka City has two private railways nearby, with JR Central also offering collaborative travel tickets. I have also ridden on three different railways, apart from the famous SL running on the Kanaya Railway. In April 2021, I visited an Audrey Hepburn photo exhibition at the Aroma Museum in Iwata City, taking a highway bus to Hamamatsu North Station (currently a suspended route) and then returning via Enshū Railway from the Automobile School Mae Station to the new Hamamatsu Station and JR Hamamatsu Station to Toyotacho Station. (There is a café with delicious tea in the Enshū Department Store.) In August 2021, I arranged to pick up a working Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter, which had been a nostalgic favorite of mine, through the "Jimoty" site, at the Shizuoka City Chamber of Commerce building, after taking the Shizuoka Railway to Shin-Shimizu Station. As the sacred site of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the eastern area of Shizuoka City and the western area of Hamamatsu City, both sides collectively provide a charming view of Mount Fuji and have an appeal that is not found in the three major capitals of the Tōmei, Naniwa, and Kinki regions, while still being recognized as a good transportation hub. I hope for a movement, as stated on the “building stay” founder's website, to "enjoy the city and discover travel." *Building stay: I initially associated "building" with tall concrete or steel structures, but rather, it has now come to evoke the general concept of staying in any residential building, leading to the proprietary name "Shizuoka Building Stay."
