“Great relatively low cost hotel with great buffet for a first time onsen experience”
This is a great place to experience an onsen at a very reasonable price, especially if you take the breakfast + dinner option. It's actually quite a sizable hotel with seven floors of rooms, divided into two buildings. The rooms are Japanese-style (tatami floor, with a futon instead of a bedstead), and are HUGE in comparison to the usual business hotels you find in Japan for the same price. One worry I had was that this hotel (and pretty muych all the others in and around Izu) charges per person, which made me wonder if I would have to share the room with another guest - this turns out not to be the case, I had the entire room to myself. One worry I had was that the bathrooms would be shared, as it is in smaller onsen hotels, but this was not the case - each room has its own toilet (western style with washlet) and bath (though most people would probably take their baths at the onsen). The breakfast and dinner are buffets, each takes place in three 90 minute "shifts" (you choose which you want when you check in, and are given tickets which are time-specific). There is a huge range of food options, mostly Japanese oriented, though they also have breakfast rolls. If you are into raw fish, you can have unlimited sushi and sashimi. The grilled fish was fantastic. If you are vegetarian there are salads and other vegetarian fare. The staff generally DON'T speak English, and the signage (including the food labels at the buffets) is all in Japanese, but it's fairly simple to communicate and navigate using Google Translate. The actual hot spring baths are up on the 7th floor of the main building, and in the basement (level 1) of the annex. If you've never been in a Japanese public bath I would strongly suggest perusing the MANY videos on YouTube about expected procedures and behavior in a public bath. At this particular bath, you have to bring the towels from your room (they bring fresh ones every day, which they hang from the door knob) to the onsen. The two 7th floor baths alternate between men and women - in the evenings men get the rock bath ("Iwa") and women get the wood bath ("Hinoki"), and for the morning session they are switched. The baths are not available in the afternoon (so they can be cleaned). The baths on the 7th floor actually have two pools each, one indoor and one exposed to the outside air (which was quite cold in November, this being an attractive feature). The baths in the annex basement were "fixed" (men get one bath, women the other, and these don't change). All the baths are worth experiencing, the one in the annex basement was quite large. One thing you will notice is that the clientele seems to be exclusively Japanese, and mainly older people. Most of the young people I saw were accompanying older relatives, and there were no children. One of the activities advertised was table tennis - this seems to be a standard activity at onsen resorts. In this I was disappointed - I was imagining a room with several people playing, where I could join in. The reality was that you had to reserve a table at the front desk for a specific time slot (mainly in the afternoon), which meant that if you were by yourself you wouldn't have anyone to play against. When I had a look at the room it was empty - there were three tables of rec room quality with saggy nets, though there was plenty of space. In the next room were a large number of retro video games and an air hockey table, though no one was using them at the time (perhaps this changes during the high season, which would perhaps be around Golden Week in the spring). Getting to the hotel from the railway station is an issue - it's a fairly long, and importantly, STEEP walk uphill. One thing I didn't find out until I went out for a walk on the second day was there IS A FREE BUS FROM THE RAILWAY STATION - it leaves the railway station every half hour or so in the afternoon (when most hotel guests will be arriving) and makes the trip from the hotel to the railway station several
