“Decent inexpensive option in a nice area”
Stayed 4 nights here and cannot say enough about the staff. Super friendly and helpful, and always accommodated our requests. The manager was especially helpful and made sure our needs were catered to. The resort is on a very nice stretch of beach with only 5 other resorts. The amenities and physical condition do not seem to match the neighboring resorts, but It is the least expensive. I would say it is good value for the money for staying in a nice quiet section of beach on the island. I would love to give 5 stars for everything because the staff was so wonderful, but I cannot overlook some very obvious issues. First, the shower is salt water. I read this beforehand and I didn’t think anything of it, but it is slightly strange. I never felt like I got entirely clean, to be honest. That being said: the water pressure was great and hot (salt)water was plentiful. Second, the round bed is an odd feature. Neither of us are big or tall; so it was okay lengthwise, but I would imagine anyone over 5’10” would find it very uncomfortable. Aside from the odd shape, the mattress itself was very uncomfortable. I read some other reviews which described the mattress as “firm”. I would definitely agree with this, but it honestly felt like sleeping on a boxspring. I did not sleep well at all. Third, the overall condition of the resort is a bit “tired” as some other reviews mentioned. There was a lot of deferred maintenance inside and outside. The most noticeable issue for us was the fact that the rear bungalows (where we stayed) do not have thatched roofs like the front ones overlooking the ocean. I don’t know if they were removed at some point or the resort just never got around to finishing them. This wouldn’t have been a problem had it not rained. The noise was so loud it woke me up and prevented me from sleeping. The front porch was also uncovered so everything got soaking wet and water came inside the room. I can’t say with 100% certainty, but I would imagine the thatched roofs prevent 90% of that noise and 95% of the water issue on the porch. So if you are debating the cheaper option…I would suggest upgrading - especially if it’s rainy season! Lastly, along the lines of deferred maintenance…the sliding front door had gaps around it which let in some of the elements…including ants and geckos. Geckos aren’t a problem, but the ants were annoying and prevented us from being able to have ANY food in the room at all. Overall, I would personally not stay here again unless there were no other better options. That being said, if you want to stay on Pagoda Beach and pay less than all the other resorts, and are willing to deal with the aforementioned issues…this is the place for you!
