This is out 4th season at Rusutsu and 3rd stay at Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention. We are back because our experience here keeps getting better and better, despite missing out on the last 2 seasons due to the pandemic. Because things are pretty much the same as 3 years ago, which some tweaks, we are absolutely ok with the setup they have, including the limited dining options. For others, this is something to keep in mind. If you have a family of four, go for the 3+1 bedroom option. While a little tight on space, it worked for us and you can always move the single beds together to create more space for your luggage. Room cleaning was often done for our room late in the evening, which meant that we would come back from the slopes to an unmade room. That was absolutely fine with us as we usually just dump our stuff and head out for dinner. The new onsen, which was launched just before the pandemic, is great, especially the outdoor part. My 2 boys loved it when it was first launched 3 years ago and still do. It is a must-do daily apres-ski activity for them. The 25+5 hour lift ticket option, which has been launched for the first time this season, is an absolute winner! It halved my lift tickets cost compared to 3 years ago...at the very least! That said, Shinchan Crayon Kids Ski School is the main we keep returning to Rusutsu. They have the most caring ski instructors and we have developed real personal relationship with their key personnel over the last 4 seasons. Ayumi-san, Mishi-san, Nakamura-san, Hashimoto-san and Ms Orange - you guys are the best! We also took Ski and Snowboarding lessons from the Rusutsu school. The 3 instructors we had were great! A special shout-out to Owain Jones, Mylo Allan and last but certainly not least, Mackenzie Spurgeon. Our oldest boy had a blast with you, even though it was only for 3 hours. Hope to see you guys back in Rusutsu next year!
The staff were amazing”
Amidst the spread of COVID-19, I was hesitant about going on a trip, but I also wanted to give my fourth-grade son a memorable summer vacation, so I decided to go. We had stayed here with our family about 10 years ago, but I was surprised to see that the amusement park, pool, and activities had been greatly improved compared to back then. There was also a newly built hot spring, and we were able to spend a fulfilling day just within the facility. Additionally, when I realized that I had lost my coin purse at the airport after checking out, I called the hotel and they immediately checked and found it for me. The person who assisted me was very attentive and listened to me carefully, and their subsequent response was truly prompt and kind. I have no words of gratitude. I definitely want to stay here again with my family.

Too spacious interior”
I used it at the end of GW. There were few customers. I enjoyed the amusement park and the pool. The room was larger than I imagined. I made a reservation for four people: two children in higher grades, one child in lower grades, and a couple. Four extra beds were prepared, but we only used three. The child in lower grades is small, so we were able to sleep together. I thought it would be nice to have a sofa instead. I should have made a request when making the reservation. The hotel itself is even larger. There are two baths, and we walked about 200 meters to each. I was surprised by how spacious they were. There are also various shops, and the staff members were very friendly. If I had to say something, I would like the location of the microwave to be specified. I noticed a microwave in one of the shops, but it was only for warming up items purchased in the shop. It's natural, of course. We stayed without meals, so we bought food at a nearby convenience store. It would have been nice to be able to warm it up. I know it's a selfish request, but I would be happy if there was a microwave. Thank you for the two days.

I stayed for one night at the end of the summer season. Since I was with small children, we only used a part of the amusement park area, but there were many enjoyable spots such as the indoor pool and the two-story merry-go-round in the hotel, and it was a very satisfying stay.
Back for the 6th time!”
A shorter stay this time around as the older boy's schedule only permitted us to start our vacation just a few days before Christmas. We spent some time in Sapporo before taking the free shuttle over on Christmas day. We stayed 7 nights and this being our 6th season here, this review will focus more on what has changed from the last season. But firstly, what is great about this resort and keeps us coming back - the powder snow is even more awesome than last season as we are arriving later. We had also booked a total of 15 hours of snowboarding lessons with the incomparable, Mackenzie Spurgeon - snowboarding instructor par excellence. This was our 3rd season with him and my older boy loves him to bits. Not so great were our dining options - given that we were there between Christmas and New Year, the restaurants that accepted reservations were largely booked-out. So, we were restricted to those that did not, which meant we were either dining at Kakashi or Cricket. Which was fine as the food they serve is great. We also tried the Venison Burger from the food truck parked just outside the South Wing and the taste was just mind-blowing, especially with the wasabi sauce. They had new lockers which utilised the room keycard, making it much more convenient but the capacity was reduced. This presented a problem for us as we had 4 sets of Snowboards/Skis and boots, which could not fit in the locker. However, they were quick to provide us with one of their spare lockers, which was nice. The lines to take the ski lifts were long but we largely avoided it on days where we were taking lessons, as they had priority lanes for us. On other days, we just headed to the East Mountain, which had relatively shorter queues, especially if you start early, which meant taking the gondola over at or before 9am. We also found that it was preferably to schedule lunch at 11-1130am to avoid the crowds - otherwise, expect to spend time waiting for a table, and then queueing for food. Equipment rental prices went up but the cheaper Yen helped to offset it somewhat. Gone were the 'Welcome Vouchers', which helped to shave off up to 20% of the costs of dining on the ski slopes and retail purchases in the resort - somewhat expected as the tourist hordes have returned. Lift ticket prices also went up but the 25+5 hr deal remains a great option if you are staying at least a week or so. The relatively new Kotobuki-no-yu onsen remains a favourite of the boys and we usually ended the night with a visit to the Game Arcade. The resort continues to stretch their concept of "eco-cleaning" by only making up our rooms on every fourth day...which meant it happened only once during our stay. They also converted the large hall, where the Crayon Shinchan Ski School used to be housed, into a sort of party cum carnival venue, calling it Bon Odori. It was loud and kind of quirky but at least, they are trying to offer something new. All in all, we had a great time and would probably come back again next season for the wonderful snow, the familiarity and our beloved snowboarding instructor, Supermac!
