“Best hotel I've ever stayed in”

This was hands down the best hotel experience I've ever had in my life in all honesty. I was looking for an onsen town to visit while I was in Tokyo last spring. I somehow found this place on Agoda and booked a room for two nights and stayed in the Mizu-no-Kataribe Annex Japanese Style Semi-Double Room with a Semi-Open-Air Bath. This place is a hidden gem that most people overlook, I was pretty lucky to find it. It's about a two hour ride from Tokyo station using the Odoriko Limited Express train. The view you get on the train was amazing as well and it cost me around 60 dollars (US) for a roundtrip ticket. Once you arrive at Shuzenji station, you take a bus to the hotel (there's staff, they'll help you find which bus to take and also give you a map of Shuzenji). I arrived at the hotel and staff immediately greeted me and helped me get settled in. I was literally being treated like a king the second I stepped foot in the hotel. The staff were the nicest people, literally. You take your shoes off and put them in a locker and they give you traditional shoes to wear. After that, they give you a map of the hotel (it's big) and set up a breakfast and dinner time then show you to your room. If you stay in the room I stayed in, you have to cross the bridge to get there (which I think gets closed off at a certain time, which was 1am-4am I believe but I could be wrong). Room was traditional yet extremely nice and clean. Bed was so comfortable I passed out the second I laid down (That never happens to me meaning it was a really nice bed), the private onsen had a nice view of the river and was super relaxing. They are also a change of clothes to wear to walk around the hotel in, very comfortable, as well. When you go down for dinner/breakfast, you get greeted by the staff in the most polite manner. You get your own booth and get to pick different courses of meals you want. They bring so much food and all of it is delicious (I think it's called "Kaiseki"). The hotel itself is beautiful, there are more onsen inside the hotel that you can go in if they're vacant. There's also the main onsen everyone goes in. There's free alcohol vending machines. You can also go walk around the town and explore to see the Temple, the Bamboo forest, local shops, etc. I honestly think that the staff really made my stay and experience here amazing because the customer service was top tier, the best you can get. I'm super grateful and glad that I visited here and I would recommend anyone to visit this hotel. 10/10

“ A Truly Wonderful Stay at Toukairou Kikugawa”

This was the highlight of my Izu trip! Everything about Toukairou Kikugawa exceeded my expectations — the environment was peaceful and beautiful, creating a truly relaxing atmosphere. I was pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful and well-designed the entire experience was. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the private onsen was incredibly comfortable — a perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. I also loved the wide variety of complimentary snacks provided throughout the stay. It’s rare to find such a perfect balance of hospitality, comfort, and charm. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Izu. I’d love to come back again!

“A comfortable and leisurely place for recuperation.”

The hotel is located right across from the Shuzenji Onsen bus station, and the check-in process provides kneeling service throughout. The hotel has nearly 400 years of history and is a scenic spot in itself, with beautiful views. To stay at Suwano-yu, guests need to cross a suspension bridge, which is a benefit of Suwano-yu; guests from other places like Kazeno-yu and Tsukiyo-yu can't come over, but guests at Suwano-yu can visit them, haha. Right outside the hotel is a rushing river, but the soundproofing in the room is quite good, so you can hardly hear the noise, making for a comfortable sleep. The hotel also offers oden before dinner, and after 10 PM there’s free ramen. Besides coffee, Gyoseki An offers milk before 3 PM and yogurt after 3 PM. There are several beverage machines in the hotel where you can get different drinks, plus free ice cream. It feels like the hotel is worried you might not get enough to eat; you don't want to go out at all. The refrigerator in the room even offers samples of Izu orange jelly, which is very tasty, and I bought some in the hotel shop. The breakfast and dinner for a stay of one night and two meals vary, and there's always a dedicated server. The lovely staff member, Kato Chinatsu, provided excellent service on the second night and was always smiling. The hotel has several hot springs, and in two days you can't enjoy them all. Overall, this hotel is perfect for unwinding and enjoying a slow life, and it's no wonder that many Japanese literati have come here to rest and rejuvenate throughout history.

    “Decent Onsen with helpful staff”

Located right across from a bus stop for easy access from Shuzenji train station. Staff were helpful and polite. The rooms were clean and the outdoor onsen (both private and shared) were lovely, clean and not overly big. They have free flow of drinks including coffee , beer and sours. At night there is also an hour of Ramen service that was really delicious. The evening Kaiseki course was however a bit lacking in value in comparison to the price paid for***yen versus other ryokans I have been to. That said, they were certainly a lot more welcoming than Asaba Ryokan who had a very snobby caretaker. I would highly recommend this ryokan and will visit again.

    “Great traditional hot spring hotel.”

In "The Dancing Girl of Izu," the famous onsen mentioned is Shuzenji. The Yumekuro Kawakatsu Hotel gets its name from a long wooden corridor. Natsume Soseki once recuperated here. Transportation: It takes just a few bus stops from Shuzenji Station to get here. You can pick up a free bus schedule at the tourist information center. The hotel is located directly across from the Shuzenji Onsen Station. Check-in is at three o'clock, and there is a detailed introduction to hotel facilities. Dining: Dinner and breakfast need to be reserved in advance, with dinner available at 5:30 or 7:45. All meals are served in private small rooms, ensuring good privacy. The dishes are extremely abundant, and the menu changes every month. For dinner, you can choose one main dish and one staple from three options. Breakfast offers a choice between Western-style and Japanese-style. If meals weren't booked during reservation, you can still order on-site (dinner is 9000 yen, breakfast is 2000 yen). From 6:00 to 6:30 PM, there is free oden (radish, fish cakes, beef offal) that is very flavorful. From 10:00 to 11:00 PM, there is free ramen. In the afternoon, the Soseki shelter offers free Yakult, and in the morning, there is iced milk (two flavors), with a special tool and instructions in the fridge for opening milk. There is free coffee, tea, and water available 24 hours. The ice machine provides free beer and drinks from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Onsen: We happened to find that the public onsen bath was empty, turning it into the largest private bath, haha. The bath products and skincare items provided are the most comprehensive available in the hotel onsen. There’s a particularly good face wash made from sake lees. The private bath is smaller, and the bath products and cosmetics are limited. The onsen has certification and test reports, with a pH value of 8.6. It's said to be weakly alkaline, which is believed to enhance anti-inflammatory effects and regulate blood sugar. Surrounding attractions: It can be explored in a little more than one hour and is known as "Little Kyoto." There are two foot baths available for relaxation. One day is enough for a stay. The only downside is that no elevator was mentioned during the reservation process. Carrying luggage up to the second floor can be a bit cumbersome.
